Also in the collection is the historical double folded program for the Ninth Annual U.S. National Lawn Tennis Association Tournament that was held at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island on Wednesday, August 21st, 1889 and the scored, bracketed program has been filled in with all 32 names of the participants that played. There were five rounds in the tournament and while the winning name in the last bracket is Shaw, it reads on the side above his name on the top edge that he faced Henry Warner Slocum Jr. in the final and Slocum was the winner. Slocum was the son of American politician and Union General Henry Warner Slocum. Slocum Jr. entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1955 and was president of the USTA from 1892 - 1893. All writing thoughout the entire program is in early pencil and includes the name GEORGE MORGAN MACKNIGHT 1889 across the top of the unfolded program.
